My main advice would be to stick with reputable brands who have cyclists to design the products and test the fabrics first-hand. For a winter jacket, go for a softshell and aim for a ‘partial protection’ if possible. This means it will be warm, breathable, feel nice to wear AND have some protection from the rain (which Goretex Infinium does). For ultimate protection from the rain, get a packable rain jacket with good breathability/waterproof ratings (minimum 10k/10k for example) for the inevitable British rain. I’d also recommend reading the customer/product feedback comments provided on sites like Amazon which will give you an idea of how the coat performs in certain conditions, e.g. light rain or downpours. You can also gt feedback on breathability and lightweight/compact it is in terms of being able to fit into your back pocket.

This should keep you comfortable, warm and dry no matter what the British winter throws at you.
