As we return to the office post-pandemic, many will be cycle commuting to. Some of you will be picking up where you left off and others will be starting commuting for the first time. There are many things to consider on your commuting bike, such as lights to deal with low light/night riding common to the winter months, adequate weather protection about your core and extremities, mudguards to keep minimize spray and mud splatter, and importantly tyres which should ideally be suited to the rigours of daily commuting. Those expensive, super quick, racy, narrow tyres might be great for weekends but not great for the daily commute on urban roads which are more likely to house debris like broken glass, increasing your chance of punctures. Also, as a daily commuter, you can’t pick and choose your sessions as you ride 24/7/365 and so your tyres must be able to handle, wet, slippy, greasy and icy conditions.
Good commuting road-bike tyres typically have the following features:
- Typical width is between 28 and 35C which gives more grip and comfort reduces puncture risk.
- Commuters tyres often have more volume than road tyres, evening out bumps, allowing for a smoother ride
- Additional puncture protection
- Function at lower pressures than road tyres, allowing a more cushioned rather than jarring ride, particularly when going over bumps and minor road deformities.
