5 Best Winter Softshell Cycling Jackets
A softshell cycling jacket is worn as a part of a cycling clothing layering system, comprised of a base layer and a breathable exterior waterproof cycling jacket typically referred to as a hardshell. Winter softshell cycling coats occupy the apparel gap between lightweight insulating garments and waterproof hard shells.
The main characteristics of softshell cycling jackets are breathability, being light in weight, with some degree of wind protection, and water resistance, (but they are not usually 100% waterproof).
Since the typical softshell cycling jacket may act as the exterior outer shell in autumn and on mild winter days, some degree of high viz marking or colouring will be present too. Another important feature of softshell cycling jackets is that they are by definition soft and quiet (not rustly), being made from woven fabric, making them more comfortable to wear, stretchy and warm.
How should you use a softshell cycling jacket?
The typical softshell cycling jacket will be far too warm to use in the summer months and any temperature above 10 degrees, assuming you are doing intense riding. For sports and workout style riders, going in late autumn, early spring, and mild winter conditions, perhaps between 5 and 10 degrees celsius, then a softshell cycling jacket will be fine with perhaps a base layer. If it is very cold and/or wet then your softshell would then need to be accompanied by a base layer and/or a waterproof exterior hardshell cycling jacket. Softshell cycling jackets are meant to be used for high-exertion activities, e.g. when you are working hard. Also, if there is torrential rain, then it is best to leave your softshell at home, (as it will fail under these conditions), and rely on a dedicated waterproof outershell.
