What are Power Meter Pedals?

In short, a power meter is a technical gadget fitted to a bicycle that measures the power being produced by the rider. According to Wikipedia, ‘Most cycling power meters use strain gauges to measure the torque applied, and when combined with angular velocity, calculate power’. The power meter pedal can transmit this data wirelessly to a bike computer offering instant feedback to the cyclist. It can offer a more precise analysis of power output during rides making it an excellent tool for training and performance improvement.

Available from the trusted Ribble Cycles, some other power meter pedals to consider are these shown below:

  1. Garmin Rally RS200 Dual-Sensing Power Meter
  2. Garmin Rally RS1000 Single Sensing Power Meter
  3. 4iiii Precision Pro Power Meter Chainset – 105 R7000

Dual-sided power meter pedals

Pedal-based power meters can have sensors located either in the pedal axle or the pedal body, allowing the cyclist’s force to be measured exactly where it is applied, via one or both pedals. Dual-sided power measurement can be achieved when sensors a located on both pedals and are simultaneously feeding power data in real-time from both legs to the power meter and bike computer. This dual-sided analysis is good for identifying and correcting performance compromising differences in power output per leg.

Ride to Power

A power meter gives a cyclist the ability to ride according to specific power output. So, if you doing some interval training when riding you can immediately see that you have hit 300 watts for example instead of waiting for your heart rate or breathing to hit your desired level.

Other Power Meters

Crank and Spider-based Power meters can measure the torque applied through the pedals using strain gauges that are located with the crank or crank spider.
