3 Tips for a safe mountain bike night ride:

1.Try to avoid solo riding. It’s much safer and more fun mountain biking in a group at night because if you fall off or have a bike failure there will be someone there to help you. Also, there can be a great sense of camaraderie when marauding through the woods at night. If you do go alone tell someone where you are going and when you are coming back.

2.Use Super bright bike lights. It’s dark in the woods and you’ll need the best mountain bike lights for the money which are powerful lights of 1,000 lumens or more to navigate safely through the bumps, twists, turns and tree trunks. You’ll need a helmet light and handle bar light on full beam for fast, technical downhill trails but perhaps turn the helmet lights off beams down when climbing or when easier trails to save power.

3.Dress to suit conditions. Once the sun goes down, it will feel much colder at night, so pack or wear an extra layer.Skull caps and merino neck scarves provide are useful as you can remove them when ascending to prevent overheating and reapply them when descending for greater insulation. Windproof gilets or a softshell are great ways to stay warm at night when mountain biking.

4.Avoid jumps. With reduced visibility and shadowy forest floors a normally routine jump could be extremely treacherous in the dead of night and so keep it simple as technical trails will be challenging enough, requiring much more concentration than in the day.
