🚴 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 2026 Preview and Race Result

Cobbles, Cold Roads & Early Season Form Tests

The Opening Weekend of the Belgian Classics kicks off with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad — the first serious cobbled test of the season.

Expect cold temperatures, crosswinds and selective racing.

📍 Course Overview

Distance: ~200km
Surface: Cobbles + rolling climbs
Key sectors:

  • Haaghoek

  • Leberg

  • Muur van Geraardsbergen

  • Bosberg

The race is rarely won solo from distance. It often splits on the Muur, with a reduced group contesting the final kilometres.

🌬 Weather & Tactical Outlook

Early season Belgian weather typically means:

  • 4–10°C temperatures

  • Possible crosswinds

  • Damp cobbles

If crosswinds hit exposed sectors, echelons could split the race before the final climbs.

🛞 Likely Bike Setup & Tyres

Omloop demands balance: speed + compliance.

Tyres

  • 28–30mm tubeless

  • Slightly lower pressure than summer racing

  • Expect 4.5–5.0 bar depending on weight

Top tyre types likely used:

  • All-round race tyres with reinforced sidewalls

  • Tubeless setups preferred for puncture resistance

👉 Tyre Options

  • Continental GP5000 S TR

  • Vittoria Corsa Pro

  • Pirelli P Zero Race TLR

Wheels

  • 40–50mm carbon rims

  • Slightly shallower front if crosswinds are strong

  • Wide internal rim width (21–23mm internal)

👉 Recommended mid-depth classics-ready wheelsets

Other Setup Notes

  • Double bar tape common

  • Slightly relaxed geometry

  • 54/40 chainring setups still common for cobbles

🏆 Likely Contenders

  • Mathieu van der Poel

  • Wout van Aert

  • Mads Pedersen

  • Jasper Philipsen

  • Breakaway specialists from smaller Belgian squads

If the race is aggressive early, don’t rule out a long-range move.

🔮 Prediction

If conditions are dry and controlled: reduced sprint finish.

If windy and chaotic: small elite group decides it.

Van der Poel and Pedersen look strongest on paper — but early season surprises are common.

🎥 Recap

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 2026 – Race Recap

Race Winner: Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech)
Location: Gent to Ninove, 207.2 km – Opening Weekend of the Spring Classics

Stage Summary:

The 81st edition of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad delivered a spectacular start to the 2026 classics season, with Dutch star Mathieu van der Poel powering to a dominant solo victory on a cold and challenging day of racing through the Flemish Ardennes.

After a season build-up that saw pre-race favourite Wout van Aert ruled out due to illness, the pressure lay on van der Poel and the rest of the elite peloton to animate the Northern classics opener. Van der Poel, making his Omloop debut, answered emphatically.

The decisive moment came on the iconic Muur van Geraardsbergen, where van der Poel launched a powerful attack. Breaking clear with about 16 km to go, he managed to hold off all chasers and ride solo into Ninove, demonstrating both strength and tactical precision.

Florian Vermeersch was active in the break and briefly looked set to animate the finale, but van der Poel’s acceleration proved creating a gap that lasted to the finish. Vermeersch and others in the reduced select group chased hard but were unable to reel in the Dutchman.

This decisive move and controlled rhythm through the key climbs reflected van der Poel’s growing classics prowess and signalled a major statement as the cobbled campaign gets underway.

Top Results – Men’s Race:

  1. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech)

  2. Tim van Dijke (following in chase)

  3. Florian Vermeersch (in reduced group)
