🗺️ Route Overview & Key Climbs
The route starts in Pau with relatively gentle terrain for the first 70 km. But once the race hits the intermediate sprint at Argelès-Gazost, the road tilts skyward—hard.
Key Climbs:
-
Col du Tourmalet – HC | 17.1 km at 7.3%
A legendary climb, this monster hits early in the stage and is expected to thin the bunch dramatically. -
Col d’Aspin – Cat 1 | 12.0 km at 6.5%
A mid-stage climb that allows aggressive riders to launch long-range attacks or set a brutal tempo. -
Col de Peyresourde – Cat 1 | 9.7 km at 7.8%
Steeper and shorter, this will be the launchpad for late attacks. -
Luchon-Superbagnères – HC | 16.3 km at 7.4%
The final summit finish is a relentless climb with exposed sections and variable gradients—perfect for decisive moves among the GC leaders.
Total elevation gain: ~4,200 m
Intermediate sprint: Argelès-Gazost (km 72.5)

🔍 Tactical Preview
🔹 GC Contenders
This is one of the decisive mountain stages of the race. Expect teams like UAE Team Emirates (for Pogačar) and Visma–Lease a Bike (for Vingegaard) to control tempo on the Tourmalet and Aspin, and unleash fireworks on the Peyresourde or final climb.
-
Pogačar may attack from distance if he’s behind on GC.
-
Vingegaard, if in yellow, will ride defensively and try to match any moves.
-
Evenepoel may struggle on the longer climbs if isolated.
-
Carlos Rodríguez and Juan Ayuso could be dark horses here.
🔹 Breakaway Chances
A large break could form before the Tourmalet, especially if the GC teams are happy to let stage hunters battle it out. Climbers like Romain Bardet, Thibaut Pinot (if racing), or Ben Healy could thrive here.
🔹 Team Tactics
-
Ineos Grenadiers may go all-in with a multi-pronged attack strategy.
-
Groupama–FDJ, Decathlon AG2R, and EF Education–EasyPost may all target the break.
🏆 Predictions & Key Riders
Likely Stage Winners:
-
Tadej Pogačar – if he’s feeling strong, expect a late-stage surge.
-
Jonas Vingegaard – strong climber and tactically sharp.
-
Juan Ayuso or Carlos Rodríguez – breakthrough potential.
Breakaway Options:
-
Bauke Mollema
-
Romain Bardet
-
Giulio Ciccone
-
Ben Healy
📊 What to Expect
| Rider Type | Strategy | Time Impact |
|---|---|---|
| GC Favourites | Must defend/attack on final 2 climbs | ±1:00 to 2:00 possible |
| Climbing Domestiques | Huge role on Tourmalet/Aspin | Protect leaders, set pace |
| Breakaway Riders | Must get clear early, survive final HC climb | Could win by minutes |
🧭 General Thoughts
Stage 14 is a back-loaded mountain stage with a sting in the tail. The long, high-altitude climbs and summit finish are custom-made for GC shake-ups. Expect aggressive racing, possibly long-range attacks, and dramatic gaps at the finish. Whoever leads after today will have passed one of the Tour’s hardest tests.

🕒 Time Gap Projections
Stage 14 features four major climbs, including two Hors Catégorie efforts. These projections assume aggressive racing over the final 80 km and are based on historical data from similar Pyrenean stages:
| Rider Type | Key Strengths | Estimated Time Gaps to GC Leader |
|---|---|---|
| Top GC climbers | Pogačar, Vingegaard, Ayuso | ±0 to 30 sec (vs each other) |
| Evenepoel | Punchy, struggles on long climbs | +30 sec to +1:30 |
| GC Outsiders | Rodríguez, Gaudu, Landa | ±0 to +45 sec |
| Climbers in Break | Healy, Bardet, Caruso | Can gain 2–5 mins (if break wins) |
| Dropped domestiques | Sprinters & rouleurs | 20+ minutes |
Key Time Gaps Could Open:
-
On the Peyresourde, riders who aren’t protected could crack early.
-
The Superbagnères summit finish (16.3 km at 7.4%) may create 30-second to 2-minute gaps between GC favourites and faltering challengers.
